I made the move and purchased a Garmen GPSMAP 276C chartplotter. I sail an H-26 on inland lakes in the Western U.S. I want to know what is the best software solution - 276C does not come with software. Should I purchase Mapsource Data Cards or the CD of Inland Lakes and download to a data card? Thanks in advance for your advice, Mike T.

Hi Mike, our cruising grounds are a bit...

different than yours. What worked for us was to purchase a 32 meg data card for our 178C, two chart regions from Garmin, then I down loaded the regions onto the data card. That was three years ago. If you ever plan on sailing more than inland lakes, perhaps the data card that you down load yourself is the way to go. Terry

Garmin Data Cards

Whether you use the data cards or buy the CD, it will be exactly the same as far as the GPS itself is concerned. No difference. But if you buy the CD, and download the areas you want, you will have the charts on your laptop. Using the CD with the laptop gives you a lot more options. Route and trip planning can be done on the computer. You can do your route planning, mark waypoints, course, etc. and transfer that to the GPS. On the computer you can get distance, course, water depths and a lot more info. that is very useful in planning trips. I have found this to be extremely useful, as you can not only do route planning, but get total distances, and pretty well give yourself time frames too.
