Garhauer rope clutch slipping

We replaced the original main halyard this spring with a 7/16 Staset X. When the wind increases beyond 12 knots apparent, the line slips in the clutch a few inches. It also does this when we apply the main cunningham. The old halyard was not stiff like the Staset X. Is it possible that the jaws of the Garhauer clutch are worn or that it needs a stronger spring? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any advice would be appreciated. We sail a '92 Hunter Legend 37.5. Thanks, Alice A.

Did you try

clean and lubercating the clutch real good. Dirt get in and keeps the springs from letting the teeth come down.

rope clutch cleaning

Thanks for the advice, Waffle. Is there anything special you would recommend for cleaning and lubricating it? Alice

New Cam

You can call Garhauer and get a new cam. However, I'd try what Waffle suggests first.

Yes PB Penetrating Oil

They sell it in the hardware store. It comes in a spray can. Spray it in real good and work the clutch to work in in. If you can remove the clutch first so it is easy to do and less messy. If somebody used 3M 5200 to seal the clutch you'll never get it off. Remember to recaulk when done with 3M 4200.

new cam assembly

Thanks, Rick. We just called Garhauer and ordered a new cam assembly. They say they have improved them with stronger springs. We will clean and lube all the others. We feel the main halyard clutch takes much more abuse than any of the others and its spring probably has worn out. Also the staset X line is much stiffer than the original equipment halyard. Hope this works. Alice
