Wanted to post a photo of my untouched, meaning un-polished, Garhauer main sheet blocks after a full seasons use in salt water. This is really GOOD stuff and it holds up very well in salt water..!

Not surprising.
My Garhauer blocks are exactly the same. They have been in the weather for nine years and look exactly like your picture. But I will admit only eight months in salt water. If I need something(like my radar pole and boom vang) and Garhauer makes it then done deal.

My 8 years old Garhauer stuff ...
looks exactly the same. I have a large Garhauer rigid vang that sometimes blooms a wee bit of surface rust ... but easily removed with metal polish. Just about everything else is Garhauer 60 series and its all as pristine as the day I installed them ~8 years ago.

Ed, We actually get close to 6 months up here though this year I'm in quite late. That's why I said a "season" not a year. By the way my Norseman mechanical rigging fittings look like SHIT and were installed at the same time!! Six months/one season of use and all loaded with surface rust spots.. "Who'd a thunk?" Apparently there is a difference is the quality of the stainless, the passivation or the polishing cause the Garhauer & Sta-Loc fittings I have are holding up far better than my Norseman's.. BTW was sailing yesterday and will be out there this afternoon...

I've had great success cleaning
various lines on my boat using an electric powerwasher (1600 psi). I lay out the lines in long lazy loops on my driveway and adjust the nozzle on the wand to a medium spray. Walk back and forth and it blows all the crud off, and out, of my lines. They come out nice and clean and very pliable.

In person that line really does show wear, pilling and fading (look closely for the red tracer it's light pink at this point). Yes, I do wash some of my sheets as they tend to get stiff from the salt and UV. I just throw them in our front loading washing machine, in a mesh bag, and wash with Ivory Snow flakes.. I then just let them air dry.. That line is an end boom main sheet so it does not get any mast residue on it.. So if you want to keep your lines soft and clean - front loader, mesh bag, Ivory Snow and air dry. Oh, and I wash a second time without soap to make sure there is no soapy residue left over to make them slippery in the rain....

try it personally. Just take them to a laundry mat an use a front loader there. I'd worry about the bag riping and the tangled mes you'd have to explain to your better half..

Top loading washing machine works
I just daisey-chain my lines with slip knots and throw them in the washing machine, no need for a mesh bag. I also use bleach and liquid fabric softener, as since the dye is IN the fiber the bleach only 'brightens' the lines. Simply tie-in the last slip knot; undo and pull all the slip knots out when done.

That's good info about the top loader! We have not had one for a while and when we did I still did the laundry mat trick. It's good you're the guinea pig..! I have used bleach, in small doses with great success, but did not want to recommend it because I don't know the brand or make up of everyones running rigging. Also, I have tried fabric softener and found my lines did not grip the winch quite as well. What's your experience with this and have you noticed this as well? If not maybe I'll give it a try again..

I am a retired firefighter and learned this years ago when we were advised not to use fabric softner on any of our work clothes because it contained oils that increased the flammability of the fabric, this would also account for the slippage noted by Main Sail.
