Garboard Drains

Hello All,
I am considering replumbing the transom drain in my 1976 Oday 20. The previous owner gutted the inner hull liner and now the cockpit drains feed directly to the bilge. The two cockpit drains look like they should feed out the transom, but with the hull liner cut back the only way water could reach the transom would be if I mounted a 200 hp outboard and turned my sailboat into a jet ski. The current drain does have a self bailing scupper ball, but it is flush to the inside of the transom.

I have been looking at garboard drains online (West). How does the drain tube attach to the outer and inner flanges?

Am I about to make more problems?

I am trying to keep rain water out of the bilge in case the battery or pump goes out.

You definitely do not want the cockpit to drain into the bilge. Then you have the cockpit floor sloping forward on these older boats, they had to mount the drain down through the center of the boat and when these drains clogged for any reason the cockpit filled with water and then flowed into the cabin through the companion way.

I would put the cockpit drains in the transom, this will take care of 95 percent of your drainage problem. I would then use the present forward drain and plumb it out the transom above the water line but below the drain level to take care of the other 5 percent of cockpit water. If this drain ever plugs up you’ll only have that 5 percent of water in the forward area, the transom drains being larger will never become plugged.

Thanks for the reply Watercolors. I guess I'm going to disect the current garboard fitting to see how to add the two cockpit drains.

Attached is the item I’m thinking about, one to two open holes in the transom to let most of the water out and then finish plumbing in the front drain.

I looked at the fitting you suggested, I'm afraid the inner flange won't clear the inner keel.
I ended up taking the original out,drilling out the check ball and tapping for 1/2" NPT. I then screwed in a barbed hose fitting and plumbed to the cockpit drains. The worst that could happen is a leak back to the bilge, which is where I'm at now. The cockpit drains are 3/4" reimforced tubing, but the garboard drain necks everything down to 1/2". I have all the hard parts done, but I ran short of the tubing to the forward drain. Happiness is a dry bilge!
