Gap between deck and headliner

I removed the companion way hatch and the trim that holds the washboards in place. The space in between the deck and the headliner is hollow should I try to fill the void and if so with what material?

1. Trim and hatch removed
2. Hollow along where hatch would slide
3. Bridge deck (teak step removed)

Gene Gruender addressed this very issue on his Rainbow Chaser website and I followed his lead (here). Gene has moved on from his H37C, but he left the website up and it is a treasure trove of information: austinsailor.net (scroll down to the bottom for all the Hunter 37C links).
