As a '83 CAT30 original owner, I am in an email discussion with Ed Sherman of Cruising World about whether or not the AC and DC grounds should be linked. My question to Cat30 owners is - were your Ac and DC connected when you bought it new? Ed's contention is that ABYC requires builders to connect them for "safety". As a retired EE, Inactive Electrical Contractor and former Navy ET1c I say ABYC has no business setting standards for electrical without UL endorsement. My contention is that ABYC should get UL support on making sure there is no connection AND GFI outlets are installed for AC. Connecting the grounds simply expands the availability of getting between Hot AC and AC ground PLUS the ability of Capactive AC leakage getting to the prop and shaft for active electrolytic corrosion. Yet Marinas can't enforce this? I'm looking into getting advice from my local electric utility cathodic protection engineer. Walt Tice, San Diego <tice_pb@incom.net>
