Galley water faucet replacement. Do I need marine grade?

"when it rains it pours"!!!!!!!!!!!! Aside from my issues with the water heater wiring, something else happened on my 1988 Mark II this past weekend. It appears that I Have a slight crack in the water faucet in the galley. Its above the hot and cold knobs on the pipe. Small crack, constant drip when turned on. How in the #$@& did that happen?

Okay, so I am looking at boat catalogs for a replacement and I see it runs about $150+ for pretty much the same unit, BUT I am asking myself do I really need a "marine grade" replacement? The key is the size of the base (no more then 3 inches to fit within the two sinks), but their are so many units for less.

Has anyone replaced their galley faucet and can recommend a decent replacement at a fair price?

Marine grade? Geez, I sail in an Army Corps fresh water impoundment!

Thanks

Bob

Bob just go to the big box store and find one you like it not like it is out in the salt air on the ocean just don't get too fancy ...the fancier they are the more they cost

Thanks Woody.
We were already looking at everything from Glacier Bay to Peerless for a replacement but are limited to base size and height and found a few for far less then the "marine grade" units online. The single base units designed more for vessel sinks are plentiful. I was looking for any suggestion regarding a cheaper non-marine replacement that's a great fit and does not hang over the sinks too much.

We had to replace our faucet in the head since the shower extension nob was broken. Same problem with cost of marine grade versus regular. We ended up buying a well rated version of the faucet with the appropriate extension from a RV shop and it has been working without issues.

While on the subject.... Our boat is missing the manual foot-pump and faucet for the galley (the one that pumps water from outside). We have the seacock and hose but no pump or faucet. I was about to buy it, but then had a hard time figuring out what we would use it for. We are in salt water, and it would mean pumping salt water into our galey sinks...what would we use it for? We have a regular freshwater faucet already. Any thoughts on use of salt water in the galley?

Sea water pump used for hand and dish washing. Rinse with fresh, you'll save a lot of fresh water that way. And if you're away from industrial pollution you can use it for cooking too, we've boiled pasta in half salt water. You're going to add salt anyway.

C'mon, get the marine grade faucet and single handedly give the economy a big boost .

Your new faucet will be under the same conditions as your home kitchen faucet so there are no limitations as to what you can use. And that'll guarantee you find one that fits the available mounting surface.

I bought Moen faucet, their slogan is buy it for life. In other words save your receipt and they'll replace it any time for any reason, I asked the sales representative at the plumbing store what about corrosion. He told me that that would be under warranty also. So by following and fight for life one time. I believe I paid 69 or 70 blocks for mine. For what it's worth this is my 2 cents on the subject.

If you go RV, you will find plastic units that are unlikely to corrode. You may also find a plastic pull out sink unit on Ebay for around $50. For the head I used a shower diverter unit because I wanted to mount the faucet on the wall rather than counter where real estate is precious. These diverters also COMPLETELY shut off the flow to the outlet you are not using.
