I have a Hunter 25 built in 1976. Does anyone know what the fire resistant material is that is used to protect the galley stove support. I have removed it just in case it is asbestos.

Wrong choice

You stand a better chance of burning at sea than dying from asbestosis now that you have removed a heat shield. For asbestos to be dangerous it must be ground up, airborne, then you have to breath enough of it over time. You have a better chance of developing skin cancer from to much sun exposure caused by holes in the ozone layer while carrying a placcard at an anti-SUV rally. All joking asside, somethings are better off left alone.
