Galley Rebuild

I had originally planned to take out the galley on my 1974 Oday, then use the parts as a template, and rebuild the same configuration out of new wood. I did some research on the internet and I believe the walls are considered a bulkhead and they also serve as support for the mast. After I took everything out I really liked how open the inside of the boat looks. I noticed the Catalina sailboats have much smaller bulkheads and make the interior look much bigger. I'd like to make the inside of my Oday open like that as well.

I attached a couple pictures of my boat after removing one of the bulkheads and another picture after everything was removed. Also a picture of the Catalina. Does anyone know if I can make a smaller version of a bulkhead like the Catalina and install that in my boat? Along with a separate support beam for the mast. The part that concerns me is that the new proposed bulkheads don't go all the way to the ceiling. I'm wondering if those walls were not put back like originally designed the whole boat might somehow flex and twist more than it would with the original walls in place. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Rich, Welcome to the forum!
I don't know either boat but responses I've read to questions like yours are that the bulkheads are usaually structural supports and should not be modified.
Hopefully someone will come along who has the T-shirt but I would caution not to change the bulkhead design.
It may be best to keep it as is and put a Catalina 22, with the design you like, on your wish list.

Thanks for welcoming me aboard Ward! Regarding the bulkhead, I figured as much, but REALLY like the openness. I guess I could try and be the one who earns the tee-shirt.
I can't imagine I am the only person who has thought or done this before. Maybe even a small modification like putting a window opening in above the desk?

That should be doable. Pretty sure I've seen a round access port you can get with a clear insert. You could also install an opening port hatch.

If you are replacing the bulkheads try a light stain vs the dark teak. A light bulkhead and reuse the teak trim will realy pop. Plus you could paint the inside in a glossy white that will really brighten the interior.

I may do an interior update next year, this year is sails, motor and deck work.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing John! Lighter wood will go well with the white and lighten up the interior.

You may want to take a look at the O’day 222. I used to have a O’day 22, the 222 is more open due to the bulkhead configuration.

That bulkhead is perfect. Now I'm wondering if I couldn't build the same bulkhead for my oday. It goes all the way to the top and also provides support for mast compression. I know every boat is built a little different, but if it works for the oday 222 could it also work for the oday 20?
