Has anyone had any experience with a jib that is hanked on over a rolled up genoa and hoisted on a separate halyard. any comments would be welcome

Works. Spendy. But really the only game in town if you have a furled sail and only one forestay. As you note you need a spin halyard run and at the ready.

The problem with that storm sail solution is: 1, you have to go forward to rig it.... 2, it is placed high and extremely forward, away from the center of effort..... when it should placed in the other direction.
Why not invest in a detachable inner forestay so you can rig a proper storm jib. Then you only have to go halfway to the foredeck to set up the sail.... not the pulpit.
If I anticipated sailing in waters where I might need a storm jib, that would be a consideration.

For many reasons I think this would be superior to something that hoisted over top of a furled foresail. Possibly less expensive too.
I don't know what bigger furlers are like, but on our small boat, in a blow, the foresail often furls messily. And what happens if the furler fails while the foresail is partially out?
