looking to take a trip to some of the barrier island of ga/sc. Which are the most off the beaten path while also sailor friendly. Anyone with experience in this area have any tips or advice? Thanks in advance!

It's been too long

for me to remember enough to recommend any paticular places. But I would remind you that if your not familiar with the tides in this area, to be careful. For someone not used to the 8 or 9 foot tidal ranges there, it can easily cause some problems.

SC and Ga barrier islands

If you can handle skinny water, look at the southwestern end of Folly Island on the Stono River near Charleston, and consider Kiawa Island as well. A little bit more isolated area would be Edisto Island on the northeastern side of St.Helena Sound, or again depending on draft, the bay to the north of Hunting Island, also accessed from St. Helena Sound. There are some hidey holes on the Port Royal Sound between Beaufort and Hilton Head.
In Ga waters consider tucking up in the lee of St.Simons on the Frederica River, and probably the most appealing would be anchoring in the lee of Cumberland Island between the Park Service docks and Greystone.

If Charleston Harbor is one of your ports-of-call the Cooper River Marina is the least expensive place for transient docking. You can store a trailer there too. The nearest concrete ramp is at Remley Point. I did a lot of research before going to Charleston for a month in the Spring of 2011. It's a fun change from inland SC lakes with more consistent and stronger winds. Be sure you have an adequate anchor and 200 feet of rode. If you get caught in a squall drop the sails then drop the anchor. It is a long lonely haul from Charleston Harbor to the next decent marina to the South via ICW.

If I go again I'll start at St. Marys, Georgia and visit the Cumberland Island National Seashore and Jekyll Island.
