I finally gave in and decided to replace the starter on my 3GM. Have had to clean and free up the bendix a couple of times and it still wants to hang up on occasion. Plus it is getting close to 30 years old. So, I pulled it off and headed for the starter/alternator shop. Pretty good guy runs it, and is very forthright with advice and info. First off he told me it would cost about as much to rebuild as to replace with a new one. Did some internet searching. Found prices from around 250 bucks. Company called Masco is cheapest I found at 229.00. Called Yanmanr and theirs is 359. Ended up buying local, for 239.00 as shipping would more than make up difference I could save, and I like keeping the local econmy going. And by the way, apparently all the GM engines, 1GM, 2GM and 3GM use the exact same starter.
