I had dinner with a sailing friend over the weekend who suggested I check the forestay shroud, inside the roller furling. He said that they tend to suffer from a lack of fresh air and sunlight, being stuck inside the roller furling. Sure enough, when I removed the shroud, it had begun to rust, where as the port and starboard shrouds are perfect (its a 2002, H260). I will now brush the forestay shroud, to remove the rust, and coat with anhydrous lanolin to water proof. I thought this info might be useful to others. Also, I was surprised to find a turnbuckle inside the roller furling attached to the lower end of the forestay. Even more surprising was the fact that the turnbuckle was missing its clevis pins to hold the turnbuckle (and forestay) in place (see attached picture).

Hunter should be told who did this irresponsible and dangerous commissioning on your new boat, so they can contact other owners. I can’t believe your mast didn’t come down after the tenth furl. You are also missing the three or four spacer washers between the shroud and t-bolt toggle. Also, I don’t see the large thrust washer that should be on top of the nylon thrust bearing. Maybe it is hidden inside. What rusted inside? It should all be hardened stainless steel. I would contact CDI for a copy of the clear and detailed instructions on how this can be fixed properly. Obviously the dealer or person doing the commissioning didn’t read them, as they are in the box of parts from CDI. Nils Anderson

New Hunter in the family
Hi Bob, On another topic, sorry we weren't in NY long enough to get together last summer. I got busy helping my sister and brother-in-law commission their new Hunter 170 and time got short. We had a great, but too short a trip; was going to email you, but had to get back to work. We travelled 7,500 miles from Arizona to Kentuckey Lake, to Nassau Point, to Grand Traverse Bay, to Lake of the Ozarks and home to Arizona. Best sailing was on Great Peconic Bay. We're going again next summer, but this time we will allow more time. Hope we can get together. We also love our 2002 260. Attached is a picture of the their H170 next to our H260 in their driveway at Nassau Point. We are getting the H170 hitched up to our truck to launch at South Suffolk. -Nils

For the Want of a Cotter Pin a Mast Was Lost
It's a good thing that you caught the missing cotter pin problem when you did. A few years ago a H-40 in the Northwest lost it's mast due to a missing cotter pin. When the mast came down it narrowly missed the skipper. EXCELLENT idea, coating the wire with anhydrous lanolin. Not sure it will totally waterproof things but it sure wouldn't hurt. Even if you managage to keep some of the moisture out it will be worthwhile. This would be a good commissioning checklist item.

Same thing happened to me. Dealer wanted to take boat for a "dry run" and luckily he was docked next to me and noticed something funny re the roller furling. Upon investigation he fount the cotter pin missing with about 3 or 4 threads left on the turnbuckle. This was after I and my family hed been out in the lake for several hours. But he fixed it in a hurry with apoligies.

Towing H260 7500 Miles
Do I understand by your post that you towed your H260 7500 miles? I'm interested in your tow vehicle and if you used a Equalizer hitch. How did this work out? Any problems towing that far? Problems with sway etc?

Towing H-260
I towed my H-260 from Oklahoma City to Las Vegas, Nevada with a Chevrolet Trailblazer. I used the hitch that came with the vehicle which was not an equalizer hitch. The vehicle did okay but not great. I traded the Trailblazer in on a Chevrolet Avalanche and it is a great tow vehicle. I routinely tow the boat to Lake Mead and the Avalanche does great on the road and on the launch ramp.
