I have a 1990 Catalina 30. Eventually I am thinking about re-doing my sails on the boat (I have a few more seasons on them). I think that I want to have another full batten main but I want 2 reefing points. I think that I am going to stay with a 150% genoa but I am thinking about having the old genoa cut down to a 110% and storing it aboard incase of heavy weather. I have found that after you roll in so much jib the leach tends to get sloppy and the sail doesn't have that great of shape.Does anyone have two reefing points on their main? If so hwo does it work?What are your experiences with rolling in the jib?How do you set your boat for really strong winds?

I only sail a C22, and on an inland lake. The lake is susceptable to some quick changes in wind, and due to its shallowness, gets pretty rough. I needed to replace my mainsail (29 years old at the time.) I bought a new one from Airforce, now FX, and for only a few dollars more, I ordered a second reef. I've used it 3 times now, and with a double reefed main and my 150 rolled up to only 60-75%, I was sailing at 5 to 5 1/2 knots and was the only boat on the lake. My vote is, go for the second reef, and you'll not regret it.

THE SECOND SET OF REEF POINTS IS A GREAT IDEA

THE COST OF A SECOND SET OF REEF POINTS IS VERY LITTLE. YOU WILL PROBABLY SELDOM REEF DOWN THAT FAR. BUT, WHEN YOU NEED TO, WON'T IT BE WORTH A FORTUNE? IT'S LIKE CHEEP INSURANCE. ALSO, MY WIFE CAN ENJOY SAILING IN HEAVY WIND WHEN SHE WOULD OTHERWISE BE UNCOMFORTABLE. FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH, I ALWAYS HAVE THE SECOND SET PUT IN. GOOD LUCK!

Blade and 2 reefs

A 100-110% Blade (#3) and two reefs will keep a C30 on her feet in over 30 knots. In 25-30 the blade and a single reef work great.

sails on "Sun-treader"

I use a second reef on our 1984 C-30 tall rig quite a bit. Be sure that the sail is in good shape so that it doesn't gat baggy when reefed. When we purchased a new genoa, we went with a 135% to replace our 150% and do not regret it. Plenty of power in light air, but it has a better ability to be reefed down and keep its shape. Be sure you have a foam luff. Our sails are from Scott Sails in MD - I highly recommend them.
