I have a chance to buy a used 1621 Furuno radar for $400. Assuming it works properly, should I get it or put another $1000 with it and get a new model?

Used radar

If it works, then, there's your answer. A lot of times, new gear like that comes out and folks trade up, so used doesn't necessarily mean "wore out." And, that $1,400 price; does that include the radome? Most times, radars are sold as separate components because some people want 16 miles of range while others want 24 miles and that depends on the size of the radome and the power output. Sometimes radomes are as much as the display units. Just a thought.

Good deal.

Assuming that your assumption(that it works) is correct. :) The 1621 was their entry-level, 16nm range with 5" display at 2kw I think. I'm trying to remember the Practical Sailor review, not too high I think. They have since gone to the 1622($1200.) with a better 6" display. But for $400. let me know if you don't buy it!

I'd buy it for that price.

I've had a 1621 on my 37c for about 4 years now. Not a bad unit at all. If it works and looks to be in serviceable condition (e.g., no serious corrosion), you won't be sorry for that price. Not the best rated, but plenty of target discrimination and options for tuning, clutter suppression, warning zones, etc.

Furuno 1621 is a good unit

Assuming all [emphasis on all] of the parts are with it and it works, I might chance it. I own a 1621 now. Its super for my use. I am not looking for real long range, I just don't want to run into anything at 4 or 5 miles distant. The newer units ie 1622 and 1722 are .5 kw more powerful and have a few more bells and whistles. Ask to see the 1621 owners manual and you'll get an ide of all the features . .more than ample for me including an alarm system that you can set when other boats come within the range you choose. make sure all of the parts are there including the cable to the radome, mounting hardware and connectors and the display checks out. I would try to find a marine electronics place to check it out before I buy it. If you buy new, figure roughly a $1000. extra for a mount, pole or mast mount and base plate. Good Luck Fred Miller S/Y M Squared
