I would like to install a furling system on my 27_83...any suggestions on a brand? Also, will I have to modify my jib? Thanks

Do you have a budget?

Do you have a budget for this project? You can normally use your existing sail, but it will need modification. The CDI furler is an okay solution, but has some definite drawbacks. It is not the most robust unit on the market. There are very expensive solutions and a some moderatly priced units too. My choice would be the Spin-tec that is sold on this website. You will not get a better unit for less money, in my opinion.

Specific drawbacks to the CDI unit?

Hey Steve, I know that the CDI unit only has a single luff groove but other than that what are the other drawbacks you wrote of? Thanks

May not be a problem on a smaller boat.

Tim: My unit on my Hunter Vision 36 is very difficult to furl (in or out is not very easy). These units (from what I have been told) are really not designed to partially furl the sail. It is really either in or out. I think that they are probably fine for a smaller boat (25-26' and under), but I would not recommend them for larger vessels. Considering that many of the furlers have lifetime warranties, spending another $400-500 for the life of your vessel for something that really works well is money well spent. The biggest problems are always encounted when you can afford a problem the least. A good storm pops up and you cannot furl in your jib! That is what I am talking about.

Harken

You get what you pay for. Talk to a local rigger they usually know what works for the locale. I did, and ended up with a Harken furler and could not be more happy with it. It is easy enough to assemble and install it yourself. You might need to modify your head sail, you local sail loft can advise you on that. Do you self a favor and replace the head stay at the same time. Good luck, Okiman
