I have a roller furler on my Oday 23 (not sure of make) and I think the line has been replaced with wire spliced to line. The wire at the drum end of the furler, line at the cockpit. I had some problems with the wire wrapping around itself on the drum and jamming and also fully furling the jib in any sort of wind, I think because the splice restricted the movement through a guide. The sail would furl completely at the dock with little or no wind because of a few extra turns of the furler due to momentum. I began looking at other people’s furlers and have not seen wire used and want advice about how most systems are set up. I got a lesson in why not to differ repair and maintenance during a squall last weekend when my jib would not roll up completely and the sail was damaged.

Wire / Line

Rob, I'm no expert, but from the furlers I've seen, none of them have wire spooling into the drum. If you're unable to find any information on the specific furler, try replacing your current set up with a small diameter STA-Set line - 1/4". That's what my CDI furler uses, and it works great. Good luck, Bruce

The line on my Hood furler is de-cored

Its plain old double braid polyester with the core removed so more of it fits into the furling drum. For the furler on my C27, Hood recommends 80' of line with the first 1/3rd de-cored.

I also have a wire/rope furling line

The jib furler (Hyde Stream-Stay One) on my 1980's vintage Hunter 30 also uses a wire/rope furling line. On most furling systems the drum is too small to hold all of the furling line when the jib is fully deployed. As a solution, some systems use wire on the drum end of the line, while others (as mentioned) use a double braid line with the inner core removed to make the line thinner. You can purchase a longer wire/rope from West Marine (they sell them for halyards) or ask them if they will remove the core from one of their braided lines.

80 feet sounds like a lot

of control line for a 27 foot boat. I have a Hood 707SL on my CS27 and I use about 50 feet of 5/16. Approx. 22 of that is on the drum and the remainder leads back to the cockpit. I have never seen wire used. I only decored the first 10-12 feet of line since that still allowed me to fit enought line on the drum. Don't bother paying to have the shop decore your line, its one of the simpler things you'll have to do on your boat.

S with a dolphin jumping is the logo on the furler

Older Schaefer I guess. Wire has almost cut through the line guide attached to the furler. I am going to replace the wire with line, thanks.

Removing the core

Tim, Th easiest way is to just pull out the core from the end of the line while sliding the cover down the line. The cover will compress like an accordion but not the core. Just measure how much core you have removed and cut. If the end of the line was heat sealed you will have to cut away that part. Kevin

Decoring

Kevin, thanks for the direction.....as you said if not the easiest task accomplished on a sailboat it's darn close! took me about 10 minutes and now the furler works flawlessly
