If it were me. . . .

and I had the money for a furling main I would buy an H320.

Reef, Reef, Reef...

is all I do in the summertime on San Francico Bay with my 29.5. Winds always go above 12 kts in the afternoon which means a reef. Over 16kts means both. Then I have to shake them out to run back home to Richmond Marina Bay. The estimated 11 to 14 k to refit my boat with a roller-furling boom is the only reason I still do it the hard way. Phillip

I agree with Ed. Although I'm a big proponent of furling mains, you'll lose more than you'll gain on a boat as small as a 290. I chartered a 29.5 up at Tahoe last year, and found it to be simple to reef. It's hard to imagine needing in-mast furling on any main smaller than 400 sq. ft.

I have a 29.5 I bought it new with the standard rig (no furling main). One thing that is worth thinking about is the B&R rig and its design features. The backstayless B&R rig has different features than traditional mast head rigs. Formost is the fact that it is designed so that the main is the power sail. On a masthead rig the jib is the power sail. That is why the mast head rigs have 135's and big overlaping 150 jibs. The B&R rig has a small jib (mine came with a 110). The mast is a little more forward on the boat to alough for a bigger main. Without the backstay the main has a very big roach, sort of like a catermeran sail. This means the boat can be more easily sailed short handed , because you don't have the huge jib to contend with when jybing or comming about. When you install a main roller furling the whole purppose of the B&R rig is defeated. The main must be made smaller and cannot have the big roach . To make matters worse you still have the small jib.So you are cutting out valuable sail area. So yes you are going to have more convience but at the price of less performance. On a boat as small as a 29 it dose not seem to make sense. My boat is a little larger than the 29 with a bigger main and I sail most of the time with my wife and myself. My main is no problem to raise and lower. I did add a bigger winch on the cabin top. I can raise my main from the cockpit . I have use the crank and the big winch for the last guarter of the sail. I would not think of a furling main unless I was moving up to a much bigger boat and hey electiric winches are much cheaper than a main furling system that may get jammed and takes away performance---Clint

Yes,Yes,Yes

I have the 320 with furling main and I could be defined as a cruising kind of guy. I wouldn't have any thing other than furling main since I have had one. No sail covers!!!! Infinite reefing, Girl friend can raise sails without breaking a nail. Did I mention no sail covers. Rick, Yes Yes Yes
