Sorry to dredge up an old topic, but I'm replacing the damaged 5/16" furling line on my Schaefer furler and I've read recommendations to remove 20' of core on 3/8" line to take up less space on the furling drum. I'm thinking of using an old 3/8" UULS halyard, but it seems like stipping the cover for 20' (as I've done with my Spectra core spinnaker sheets) may make more sense than removing the core. I don't know how strong the 1/4" polyester core is compared with the strength of the cover by itself and whether that may be a problem. Any thoughts?

If you want to save space on the drum, taking the cover off the line is not going to help much. Stripping the core will yield the space savings and the cover alone is plenty strong enough for the furling line. I too prefer going to a larger line for a better "hand" and stripping the core for a good bit of the line that will be on the drum.
