I just bought a 1972 Ericson 29 and it has a furler that 'in not' attached to the stay. It has what appears to be an 80% or less jibe (small). I will be useing the boat for cruising and a-little club racing. What would be the best alround sail to replace this with? When furling the sail for heavey weather, is the strenght of the sail increased the closer it gets to the clue to handle the extra stress of a shortened sail? Lastly... What would the price range for this type of replacement? Thanks Tom Logan 'Sanitys_Edge'

Replacement Genoa

Tom, 80% seems pretty small to me for the typical San Diego conditions, which can be rather light. I would suggest a 135% genoa with a luff pad which will keep the sail flat when partially furled. Since the sail area gets smaller as you reef it the clew load does not go off the chart so no additional clew reinforcement is required. You can get a price for on of these from the sailboatowners.com chandlery. Thanks, Bill Colombo Doyle Sailmakers
