I'm new to having a head sail furling device. I have a 1983 27 with a Cruising Design furling system. Can someone give me instructions on removing and replacing sail on the foil. I need to do some repair to sail Any help would be appreciated. We love our new old boat.

If it'ds the old CDI furling sys.

The CDI sys. I have has a foil with two slots, and just below the mast head, has it's own builtin block. The trackd have a single LOOped !/4" halyard, one end connects to the top of your head sail, go's up one side, onto the builtin block at the top and down the other stack, You feed thesail and lift by pulling gently on the return halyardn until the sail is fully lifted, a pendant is attached to the bottom of the sail and secured to the builtin cleat ON THR FURL, the excess return line halyard is rolled up and secured also on a bottom cleat on th furl, WHAT I DID is when the sail is fully up, the excess rolled up halayard, took the necessary turns on the cleat, then I cut off the excess, burned the ends, and installed two S/S rings flattened so to fit in the track,(1/4" dia. the two made to connect to each other, so when I wanted to drop the sail, I connected the excess rolled up halyard(which is stored below) and lower the sail. it's a nice setup, for an older unit, I.ve seen modern Hood sys. using the mast halyard, straighten out the 1-19 head stay wire, because the halyard can't rotate and twist and fouls up the halyard and does a number on the head stay wire, which has a natural TWIST. and their covered bottom reel , is another big problem if it snags.

Two Types of CD Furlers Back Then (long)

They made the Reefer One and Reefer Two. One of them has an internal halyard in the second track of the foil. That one is pretty obvious how to use. The second type has a "catch" mechanism at the top of the foil. There is a fitting that get caught at the top of the foil and holds the sail up. To release it you must pull a stainless steel "messenger" (supplied with the CD unit)up the port side track using a jib halyard from the mast. The messenger has an arrow on it. Insert it with the arrow facing up to put the sail up and down for releasing it to come down. I had this model on my '83 h34. It was difficult to release the sail at times an I considered it dangerous. I can't image what one would do it the had to get that sail down in a hurry at sea. I contacted CDI and bought the conversion kit to add the internal foil halyard for $175. If I had it to do over it all would have gone to the dumpster and got replaced by Profurl. Somewhere (in the boat under shrink wrap) I may have manuals and old parts (messanger and catch). Most parts still available from CDI in Mass. The concept is good but I've been up the mast too many times trying to figure out how it works. Barry (bolsen34@aol.com)

I had to order some replacement parts last year. and they came through no problem for this old furler. Send me an e-mail if you need a copy of the manual. The CDI WEb site is also listed below. TRY THE CDI WEB SITE

I had the old system and upgraded it over the years to the new system with the poly luff. Love it for the simplicity. The CDI (Crusing Design Inc.) website has all the info including pictures and diagrams from the manuals. They are also very helpful on the phone. Try the web site and if it dosn't answer your questions call them. I know they helped me when my old aluminum luff seperated and I couldn't get it back together again.
