I have tried, but I am unable to obtain any help from Selden, or the dealers I've contacted, on this issue. I need to replace the sliding sleeve halves in the halyard swivel on a Furlex 100-S jib furling system. I have the new sleeve halves in hand, but don't know how to install them in the swivel. Can anyone help?

I forwarded your request to the head of sales at Furlex. I can probably answer your question, but I am at home and not in my office where I have Furlex info on my computer. Because of the holidays and the severe cold weather we are experiencing, work is not high on my agenda, so it might be after the New Year, if that is ok.

Search on the selden web site and you can find info
and manual and photo's of your furlex and may help a little.

Contact a rigger in your area as I'm afraid you may need one. We broke the tack ring on our 2001 and had to replace the whole drum assembly. The rigger we engaged to do the work indicated that in order to do a proper job he had to remove everything, including the extrusions, and start like it was a new installation. He did have to trim the headstay a couple of inches. I don't know just about replacing the halyard swivel but it seems to me it may follow the same process. We were provide a new, redesigned and strengthened drum assembly and the installation was well done and to this day 5 years latter the furler is working like a charm.

Amazing ....................

I need to replace the sliding sleeve halves in the halyard swivel on a Furlex 100-S jib furling system.
................ that no matter what the problem one has, given enough time, someone on this site will post the same problem.

I'm also looking at at replacing the sliding sleeve halves inside the halyard swivel. I also had NO responce from Selden and questionable responce from the local dealer.

However, what I did get back from a local rigger seems interesting. This idea is unproven to me and not my idea so I don't want to hear back from the armchair pundits that I'm full of crap. He's the one claiming to rig all of the new Hunters coming into this region.

According to this rigger, the method for replacing the two sleeves (Fig. 1) is to remove the two luff feeders (Fig. 2), slide the halyard swivel down over the gap (left by the removal), remove the old sleeves and install the new sleeves over this gap. Replace the feeders and "viola" you're finished.

Stephen Penny's attached manual describes how to remove the two feeders.

Please advise if this method works as it's a little cheaper than removing the mast and installing a new forestay in order to remove the halyard swivel.

One final note is that I suspect that my cause of the damage to the sleeves is that I had some work done on the foresail the previous year and it may have would up an inch too long. That increase in length may have allowed the two sleeves to contact the top guard nut.

Interesting idea and it sounds like it would work. These riggers do this for a living and they know the tricks of their trade. Let us know how it turns out.
