Anybody have experience with furlers on boats in the 20-25 foot range?

Looking at Schaefer Snapfurler or CDI FF2 for an O'Day 22 and hoping for feedback on either one of these units.

Thanks!

Does the CDI require cutting the headstay? The Schaefer SanpFurl apparently just fits over the existing headstay which sounded easier to me...

No, just an unscrewing of the turnbuckle at the deck, then you'd insert the stay from the top of the furler.

The CDI is a single extrusion that you can drive over with a car and not hurt it. If you are planning to trailer the boat all the time, it has it own halyard; thus, you can leave the sail on the furler without having to take it off. Then the jib halyard for the Hunter water ballast systems is specifically used with the mast raise system.

One issue with a system with two halves that you put together, they do have a tendendacy to slide up and down and creates some issues when putting the mast up or down.

Thanks, Dave!

I've been sailing for 50 years and used many different furlers withoiut even knowing what brands. Now, as going forward to play with a headsail has lost a lot of its appeal, I need to get this figured out. Originally I was a bit put off by all the CDI ads about having three people to straighten the foil before it takes a permanent set, etc. Seems though that it is the best seller in the small boat category, so I'm going to buy CDI

When the furler does come, it is coiled in a box. It has to be uncoiled in the opposite direction with the ends tye wrapped well under the sun to straigthen it out. I have done it alone but safely with three people but manageable with two. Otherwise, the cost of shipping straight would be very expensive by truck.

When i bought my h260 three years ago, it had the original CDI. I didnt like the permanent curve the developed in the plastic and it began to crack due to age.

I replaced it with the Schaefer Snapfurl and am very pleased.

Did the CDI have the curl when you got it? Like the curl didn't get taken out at installation? Or did it develop while you were using it?

Apparently there are no problems with the 2 piece foil on the Schaefer....Having two pieces that could come apart makes me a little concerned.......

Thanks,

Over the years I have seen furlers bend to include the plastic and metal. The key is good tuning and when the forestay is loose to allow that bending, the rest of the rig is also affected.

If the CDI fails for the oriingal owner, geneally parts are replaced at no charge. Not sure about today but that will depend on the circumstances. I remember one time when the furler was being uncoiled, my employee said it was cut in two. Warranty, heck no. Upon visual and close inspection, the new employee took a hack saw and cut it. One thing with my employees, if a mistake was made, I showed them the proper way but when they lied, well you can guess how long they remained with me. When I knew I had to close, they were given a 6 months notice so they could start looking for a job and I paid them 6 months severance. The hardest decision for me was the fact I had to let family go.

I am familiar with both products. Both work well. The big difference is the use of halyards. With the Schaefer Snap Furl you use your existing halyards. So, if you race, for example, this is a good thing if you want to make headsail changes and not go bald headed. The CDI uses their own halyard system and headsail changes cannot be done (at least very quickly). Most people who buy CDI's are not concerned with this. But, if you know that you would rather use your own jib halyards, then go with Schaefer. I am a dealer for both and parts are easy to get for each system. Both work great, but if you want even smoother performance, then also buy the bearing option with the CDI.

Barnicle Bill;

send me an email and tell me which dealership. i did not know that. You are correct but the Schaefer Snap furl does slide up and down when taking the mast down. I might be wrong but I am afflicted with CRS.
