Furler

The line on my jib furller is very difficult to pull. Consequently the jib does not wind onto the furler comfortably, as it has in the past.
The boat hasn't been used all season and is now for sale. Not a good selling feature
Maybe silly, but would the diameter of the line effect the working of the spool, etc? The line is possibly 5/15"D????
The sail seems to run off OK. Winding on, not OK.
Any suggestions will be appreciated!!!

Use binos to check what is happening at the mast head when you furl.

Also check the halyard tension. Too much or too little can cause binding as well.

Anything special to watch for with the binos?
Didn't mention that the mast is 17 ft, to go under bridges, so the furler is not a long one.

Furler is a Snap Furler, I think. I'll check. It worked fine last year. Maybe de-masting for winter storage did a bad???? Roger

Here is what I would suggest: drop the sail and see how easily or not the extrusion turns by hand. You can also do this with sailed furled and the sheets removed. If your type of furler has an upper swivel and drum bearings that should be cleaned with fresh water and lubricated, I would do so with the proper lubricant. Most all common furlers have installlation and maintenance manuals online, so check that if you don't have a manual on hand. Bend the sail back on and raise it, making sure the exit angle of the upper halyard is correct as well as the exit angle of the furling line from the drum. When the sail is deployed, check the drum to make sure the furling line is not piling up and creating an overwrap -- and that you do not have too much line on the drum when the sail is furled. Finally, if you have a halyard restrainer where the halyard exits the mast make sure it has not broken or that the halyard has somehow jumped out of it. Good luck with this.

Check that the entry onto the drum is lined up at approx. 90 degrees to the spool.
