Furler Wrapping

Occassionally my roller furler will seem to get wrapped around itself and will not fully unfurl (leaves a half a twist on the furler). I can usually "shake" it out but it requires a trip up to the bow or a tack to do it. An ideas on why this might be happening? *o

We had a similar problem which was caused when we allowed the genoa to deploy too fast. This caused an overwrap of the furler line inside the spool. (Similar to a jib sheet overwrap.) We now deploy the genoa slowly and the problem has gone away.

A turn around a winch will help

put tension on the furling line so that it will wrap snugly around the drum. Ease out the line from the turn around the drum and the jenny will open at the pace you set no matter what the wind conditions.Using a winch to ease out the furling line also allows you to set the jenny in heavy wind if you want to reef it. Happy Holidays, Tom

Thanks Tom & Dave

Thanks guys. I think you nailed it. When this happened Friday I was out with some non-sailing friends and let them get their hands "dirty" and do some work. It's certainly possible they either didn't have enough tension on the furling line as they pulled out the sail or did it a bit to quickly. I'll keep an eye on this the next time out and see if it helps. Thanks again.
