My old furler foil has two identical slots. Only one has a halyard and block at the top. What is the second slot for?

Helps to know what brand of furler it is. If it's an old CDI I can be of help. On mine, one groove is for the integral wire halyard (different from the halyard on the mast) and the other is for the sail luff.

Pictures??

you can theoretically begin to thread a small storm jib in the second slot before you ahve dropped the 1st larger jib in the 1st track .however with only 1 halyard you'd have to drop the first jib pul it to the deck then use that one halyard to run up your storm jib in track #2.. and if you had any damage like a bent track or stuck slide in your primary slot you could use the second track...some people get fussy about using the rt hand or left hand track on the theory that using one or the other makes it easier to furl the sail, which i don't put much truck in... if it's going to be heavy weather i drop the big jib and put in the small one when i am in a sheltered port not try to use 2 tracks on the high seas...

If you had a second halyard you could use it to hoist double headsails for downwind cruising, or use if for racing changes where you hoist the new sail along side the old before dropping it... thus not losing speed with a blank fore triangle.

Most of the higher quality furling systems offer a twin groove foil for the greater options it provides.

Fellers,

I don't mean to be a nag but IF Frank's furler is a Cruising Designs Inc. (CDI), the second slot is not available for another sail, it's used for a different purpose. CDI has a unique halyard system integral to the furler that occupies the second slot. This system leaves the original halyard available for downwind sails (with a wire in the luff) or a spare. His mention of a block over one slot sounded like it might be one of those.

He might not have a CDI in which case none of this applies but then again, he might. I'd really like to know exactly what he has before providing what may be incorrect information for him.

It's not a CDI it is a Reef Cusing furler. Here is a pictrure of the foil.

Bingo!

That's a Cruising Design Inc. (aka, CDI) Reefer. Here's a link to the system:
http://www.sailcdi.com/sprimain.htm
same system as I have. They made a few versions of the drum but everything above the drum stayed pretty much the same.

A picture of the top end would confirm it but like I've been saying, the second slot is for their integral halyard system. There's no swivel at the top, the whole system rotates, halyard and all.

Have you used the system? If you have I'm not quite clear why there's a question about the second slot.

edit:
I see you're local. If you don't mind the drive to San Pedro, you're welcome to stop by and see one fully rigged and working.

cdi installation and operation guide

" The double groove design of the reefer enables you to sail wing and wing with TWO jibs. The second sail can be inserted in halyard groove ,but first the halyard must be removed. Drop the furling sail ,as in changing sails and secure the messenger and halyard to the mast. Now BOTH tracks are clear and ready to use. Use the boats halyards to raise either two sails at the same time or for racing changes.

Not on mine. That's why I said I'd like to see a picture of the top of the system for confirmation.

Here are the only pictures of the top that I have its a lousy one.

Yeah Frank, those pictures aren't very conclusive. I believe you said there was a "block" at the top. Mine has a sheave, we might be talking about the same thing. I think I saw a clevis pin in the pic and if so, that's the axle for the sheave on mine.

If you could snap a pic of that top fitting showing what you referred to as a block I'm pretty sure we can determine if yours is the same as mine or not.

The fitting on top is just a single sheeve.

Mine's a single sheave too and a narrow one for 1/8" wire. It's canted off slightly to align with one of the slots. The furler's 1/8" wire halyard has a swaged "sail slug" type car with a hole in it. Note that this halyard is unique to the furler, completely different from the boat's halyards but I'll continue to call it a halyard because of the function it serves. A temporary hoisting line is tied into the car and to start the car is at the top of the furler, the wire halyard hangs outside the furler to the deck , the loose end of the temp hoisting line is at the deck too. The sail head is shackled to the loose end of the wire halyard, the sail luff is guided into one of the slots (the one that is NOT aligned with the top sheave). Pulling on the temp hoisting line pulls the swaged car down - and inside - the other slot raising the sail. With the sail fully raised, the car is at the bottom of the foil slot and is lashed off to one of the small cleats right above the drum, the temp hoisting line is removed. To tension the luff, the sail tack is hauled down Cunningham-style with a three or four purchase tackle using the sail tack and the holes on the top of the drum, cleated off to the other small cleat above the drum.

What you end up with is the sail luff in one slot and the wire halyard (led into it by the car) in the other. Note that there is nothing attached to the top of the furler, the entire assembly rotates around the headstay.

Yes we have the same one. Be careful when/if you take it apart. The connecting torque links and bearings are no longer available from the manufacturer.
I wish there was a way of replacing the plastic bearing with a ball bearing.
Thanks all for the information. Its seems like a bit of a hassle pulling up a second jib, especially without a dedicated halyard. Pulling up one is tough enough, by the time it is 3/4 up there is quite a bit of resistance.

caguy,
I've had good luck with a bearing and seal shop we have out here called "Miller Bearings". I've been in there a half dozen times and have yet to stump the staff. They also carry bearing races.
Probably something like this out on your coast and if you have the specs or parts in hand (so they can measure) they can help.
On the difficulty in getting the sail up the foil, are you using a lubricant? Sailcoat is great stuff for that sort of thing.
Good sailing!

I could use the torque links (splices). Who ever took down the furler bent them until they snapped. The sheave on mine is damaged. Undoubedly why it is so difficult to raise the sail. If you send an email to me at frankmendezgm@gmail.com I'll send you a check for the postage.
Thanks,
Frank
