Have a Catalina 30 1982. Here's my problem. I read the manuel on how to hoist the jib. Feed the sail into the starboard extrusion ( there are two tracks ). Hoist the sail using a messenger on the port channel. Okay so far. Sail is hoisted to the top. BUT as soon as I start to furl, the halyard with the messenger starts to also wrap around the forestay. Yet the manuel says once the sail is up, remove the messenger. How can I do that ? It's at the top of the mast ( because it hauled up the sail ). What is causing the halyard to wrap around the stay ? Getting kind of really frustrated here. Russ

The halyard, with messenger line removed, should get tied off at a small shackle on the base of the furler just like the tack line is.
When the furler rotates, it rotates the sail track, the sail, and the halyard as one unit around the forstay.

So, there must be two lines , one for the messenger and another for the sail itself. Sorry for my confusion, but I still can't figure out how to get the messenger down, as it was used to haul the sail up. Thanks so much for your quick reply. PS Don't see a second line. Russ

AH AH Went back to boat, stared for 20 minutes and realized the messenger starts at the TOP of the mast not the foot. Thanks for your help, Weinie. All is well. I would give you a hug if you were local ( not that there is anything wrong with that ! )

I had problem too with my last furler - a new Harken unit - piece of junk in my opinion.
I & many other sailors can get halyard wrap where the line wraps around the headstay if it doesn't turn independently. If the upper swivel wraps with the extrusion, then you have to install a restrainer around the exposed area of the halyard to prevent it from wrapping onto the sail as it furls. Good luck with it. When furlers work right they're great. When they don't they're a pain in the a@#!
