Looking to add a jib furler to a 29 foot sailboat. Thinking CDI or Snapfurl. Any opinions on either? I've had a CDI on my last boat and it always worked fine even though it had an internal halyard.
My 30 had a CDI system on it when I purchased her 4 years ago. Don't know exactly how old the unit is but have never had a day's problem with it. I sometimes wonder about the advantages and disadvantages of the internal halyard compared to a system that uses the vessel's halyard but I like having that spare halyard available. I've only taken the sail down once. It was a minor pain to re-hoist and tension because the messenger line I used had too much stretch in it. I think a low-stretch line would have made the job easier. I'm not familiar with Snapfurl so can't comment there.
I had a CDI for many years It was a good furler and gave little trouble, until it was time to change a sail. I found the internal halyard troublesome on changes. I replaced the furler 2 years ago with a standard halyard type
I looked at Alado too. I need to take some measurements before getting serious about the Alado. It's furler drum mounts above the stay adjuster. It looks like a heavy duty CDI and looked easy to install.
