Furler Jamming

My Schaeffer 2100 furler is suddenly giving me overwraps and letting the line slip through the post that goes up where I have to go up to the bow and work it back to the front of the drum. The nearest thing I can think of is that the line is getting old and starting to kink more and it is time to replace it.

Make sure your furling line is not twisted-uncoil it and run it through your hand to untwist it. Also make sure the top furling attachment is properly lubed as directed.

control line angle

Check the angle at which the control line enters the drum. The instruction manual is very specific to be mindful of this angle during installation. Also, ensure the control line is let out at a controlled speed when unfurling the sail.

My jib flew out on me and apparently that is when the line jammed up on the drum. Of course I was solo sailing and some idiot had set up a 420 race across the channel I ended up passing through twice when I had to sail back out to attempt to free the over-ride of the drum. No go. I ended up having to cut it and replace it later.

This may also be a drum alignment problem. On a number of furlers, there is a screw under the drum that holds the alignment of where the furling line exits the drum fore and aft. I'm not familiar with your setup, but you may want to take a look to see if perhaps such a screw under the drum has loosened.

All good ideas. For now I can't see how anything changed, but it will not hurt to check everything including alignment before replacing the line. I guess I could also RTFM.
