Please help me understand this Furler oDay 322.. Seems to be original equipment. There are no obvious manf markings

The Jib runs on the shuttle with is pulled up by pulling down on a halyard in the furler itself. This then forces the sail to be in constant contact with the wire halyard, which seems like a bad idea.

I also have no idea what the roller on the furler base are for.

I need to replace the sail, prolly with a 150, but want to understand the rig first.
It seems it would be smarter to replace the wire halyard with a synthetic to avoid the chafing.

Any advice?

I thought the 322 had a HOOD Furler, but this one looks more like an early CDI (Cruising Design) Reefer. These were sold prior to the development of the CDI Flexible-Furlers.
I checked my 1986 322 Sales Brochure, the original, factory supplied furler on the 322 was indeed a Cruising-Design #8 REEFER 1 ("genoa furler with internal halyard")

I'd suggest checking out the CDI web site for info. I'd also check out that halyard, I think you may be looking at it backwards? I know that on the Flexible-Furler it was all internal, so I would think that cable should be somehow contained inside the extrusion while the sail is bent on.
Those 2 sheaves on the top of the drum would be for the tack lashing to help tension the luff of the genoa (can't do all the adjusting using the halyard). Think of it like a cunningham on hte main. Rudy at D&R might have some info on this furler or maybe a fellow 322 owner still has the original owners manual?

My experience is more with the CDI Flexible Furler (on a CAL 21), but the older REEFER models seem to be rigged sort of similar.

The picture below is aparently a smaller version of the REEFER, I'll keep looking for any pics of the one that you have.

I agree it is a CDI. My friends 302 came with a furlex furler and it was one of the very early 302's made by O'day I thought. The information above on the 2 sheaves to be used for tensioning the sail is correct. I would go to google and find the telephone number for Cruising Design, Inc. in Pennsylvania. They are very happy to talk with you and will help you explore your options. Pat
