funny noise..

What does it mean when you hear like kind of a repetative banging or a hard bubble sound in the rear starboard area while motoring?

Ive never had this before. I have the MD6A with regular transmission.
I lifted the floor and it didnt become any more apparent.

Something to do with the exaust pipe?
It only was happening at higher rpms. Like when the engine was pushing more gasses out the back...

Is it possible there is water trapped in the exhaust line? Could there be too much water in the wet exhaust sump? Just guessing. Craig Tern V1519. . . . Peter, so just how many boats do you have now?

Yes, maybe i will dive down next time i am there and see if it is a piece of rope or something.

Did I read of some clogging happening at the exahust?

I can totally relate to your intentions! I find myself fighting to NOT become a 2 boat owner. It would have been extremely difficult had I come across the Ballad.

Another thought, GH ...
What kind of exhaust system do you have? Is it an original 'dry' exhaust, with the long straight tube running aft? This system has an inner copper tube for the exhaust and an outer rubber one for the ejected cooling water. (There are spacers inside to keep the copper centered in the rubber.) It runs down the starboard side of the area under the cockpit floor.

A view at the engine where gasses and cooling water are injected into the tubes.

An overall view:

A view at the stern, where the water comes out of the outer tube and is routed to the transom outlet.

The exhaust gases go down the inner tube and the exhaust water is injected into the outer one, and the two meet near the transom, where gases and liquid are combined and exhausted from the boat through an inverted "U" shaped copper riser.

The more common system used these days combines gasses and cooling water just aft of the engine.

Anyway, when I bought Sin Tacha the original system was in place, but the inner copper tube had split in several places and the gases and water were all churning around in both the inner and outer tubes, making a pop-pop-popping sound. I converted to a Vetus waterlock muffler system.

Does the banging happen only while underway? Can you duplicate it while reving the engine in neutral at the dock? If so consider that the stringer the engine mounts to may be seperating from the hull. Also might want to have the shaft aligned. These happend to Lyric with the old Albin engine. I noted the seperation when I replaced the stringers during the Yanmar installation.

Thanks for the pics Peter. Mine is like the older system. And the exhaust exits the transom low near the water level.

Also thanks for the various trouble shooting tips.
