Hi, A week ago I change my motor oil and fuel filter. Engine starts and runs good but now when I accelerate the engine completely a black cloud forms on the back of my sailboat. What can be the cause of this smoke? Thanks Jose Pla

SMoke is generally associated with rich fuel mixture rather than oil. To be safe have a competent, emphasis on competent, mechanic check out the engine. You will find it is cheaper in the long run. Charlie Miller

I had the same thing happen to me ,clean bottom,clean the prop,clean or replace mixing elbo,its just too much fuel being added too fast for one of the mentioned . especialy the mixing elbo once it cleaned the engine will run much better. nick

or not enough air. When you serviced the engine did you clean the air cleaner? It is usually just a foam filter on the outside of the air intake. Clean it in a solvent and wash it out with soap and water, let it dry and reinstall. While it is off ensure that nothing else is restricting the air flow. That should solve your problem, unless........Did you clean your injection nozzles? I hope not. They should only be serviced by a certified fuel shop. If the smoke doesn't clear-up following an inspection of the air system, the only solution is to accelerate slower or have the fuel system serivced.

before you put the airfilter back in, soak it on oil. The air filters aren't worth a damn but soaking them in oil will help them clean the air because stuff will stick to the oil. This also means you should clean your air filter more often because now it's working better.

HI, Thanks for all your Help, I will go tomorrow and verify the fuel filter and air. This motor was working great for 6 month since I acquired the boat. I decided then to change the oil filter, oil, fuel filter and air filter and now I have this problem. Let me know any other suggestions; Thanks Jose Pla

Is the air filter you replaced the correct one for the engine and not restricting airflow? It does sound like it is rich when accelerating. Are you idling the engine for a long time before accelerating, or could the idle speed have been reduced when serviced? These could lead to a rich fuel enviroment and cause black smoke when first accelerating, but it should clear up after operating rpm's are reached. A lot of Yanmar help below. Sail On... Terry

Be careful with your various filters. My Yanmar manual says to wash the air filter with soapy water, dry it and not to put any oil in it. JMHO.

Befor you go out and start taking parts off try to get it to make black smoke when it is under load and warmed up to operating temp. I know my yanmar will make smoke (like most direct injection engines) when cold or when I goose the throttle with no load on. This is normal. What is not normal is constant black smoke after warmup and with a constant RPM.
