Will a catamaran mainsail with five full lenght battens be a good replacement for my Chrysler 26 with a standard sail with three short battens. The dimensions of this used sail could fit my boat.

How big is the roach?

A catamaran often has a large roach - the curved section at the back that battens hold out beyond the straight line from the head to the clew. The roach may interfere with your backstay(s) or topping lift.. A little interference is OK, as long as the main does pull through when you tack or gybe. A lot of interference will frustrate your sailing. The topping lift can be removed in favor of a solid vang - a good mod in any case - but a backstay needs to stay. More roach means: More sail area - you will go faster in light winds. Higher sail area - you boat will be more tendeer as the wind picks up. Earlier reefing. More sail to control when you drop it. If it were me, I would take the sail in to my sailmaker, and ask him to check it out, add reef points, do maintenance, and advise me on whether I could use it. The cost shouldn't exceed a few hundred dollars. David Lady Lillie

Reduce the roach

Bacon used sails has some nice new/unused sails for catamarans with the right measurements to fit my boat at a very good price. I have a Reeds Sailmker sewing machine and a good seamstress (Wife)and a very large area for a loft. How difficult would it be to reduce the roach in the leach and shorten the batten pockets still retaining the five full lenght battens. Any sailmakers out there with a little advice? My boat has a very short boom (eight feet) is the reason a catamaran sail would fit so well.
