I would like to install a full Bimini on the H29.5. (Current specs call for a 3ft Bimini on stock 29.5, I would like at least 5-6ft over cockpit.) I have seen other 29.5s that have the traveler on the cabin (Does this impact sailability?) I also believe that I would have to raise the boom. After raising the boom, I believe that I would have to have the main sail shortened. Is this worth the effort or should I just wear a bigger hat? Any thoughts?

i don't think all the effort is worth the trouble. we have the standard bimini, and then an additional canvas that zips from the front of the bimini to the rear of the dodger for times at anchor, rain, excessive heat while motoring in no wind etc. much easier to install and deal with.

Ours has a bimini that runs from the boomvang back to the main sheet (no dodger). Cabin stays shaded, companion way covered from most rain, but aft is sunny. If you are going into the sun the shadow covers most of the cockpit. Sorry but I don't have a good picture to send. It was made by Rooke Sails, Memphis

Ameriseam (Tampa 813-854-1128) makes a two piece bimini for the 29.5. A short section over the helm with the longer one over the remaing cockpit area. This allows the traveller to remain at the end of the boom and you do not have to resize the main to raise the boom. If you decide to move the traveller to the companion way you will need to purchase a new reinforced boom from Hunter. The standard boom is designed for end of boom loads only. I know this because when we purchased our 29.5 the dealer had installed a way under designed traveller over the rope locker in front of the companion way to allow for a full bimini. In heavier winds the track would bend from the increased load. I talked to Greg at Hunter and he told me that this was not a recommended setup and that an over the companion way traveller is possible only with a reinforced boom(expensive). I installed a Harken system with a track on top of the pulpit. What a difference it made! Sail trim was vastly improved. End of boom traveller systems are much better especially on the Hunters with the large roach main and small jib. That's why the newer Hunters have the arch. Monty
