Bainbridge answer

Bainbridge makes some slugs the have an external shoulder. We put one on our FBMain on a 29.5 and it seems to work better than the standard flat 5/8 slides. I think a spring project this year will be to replace all the flat slugs with the Bainbridge slugs.

Battslide may be the ticket

This is a separate track system but they make a slug model too. (see related lin k)

other sail slug options?

what are the types of sail slugs presently available that will fit the groove in my mast without adding a track? can someone relate any experience with the extruded track that attached to the groove in a mast? is there a source of information on the web to address this type of accessory? thanks.

I read it too

That quote drew my attention too, as I have a full battened main with slugs in the mast slot. I have never had a problem with them, and I believe that if you dry lube the slot every-other time out it very much lessens the chance of slug difficulties.

Luff slides here

Here are the Bainbridge "Allslip" slides I was talking about (#A107, A108, A109, etc). Notice that they have a shoulder on the outside and are longer than the standard internal flat slide (A107, 108, and 109). This keeps the battens from twisting and binding so much. I plan on ordering them next week.

Slug Slides and Full Battens

John, Of the various mast slides, slug slides designed to fit into a round mast groove have had the most problems with full batten compression. Having said that I wouldn't give up on a full top batten for that reason alone. Since the top batten is the shortest it exerts the least amount of compression on the mast. Also there are more expensive slides such as the Allslip sldes that work very well. Most J-Boats such as the J-120 and J-105 utilize these slides with full top battens and have had no problems. Talk to other Mac 26 owners to see if they have experienced any problems with full battens. A lot depends on the mast. You might not have to worry about it at all. Thanks, Bill C. Doyle Sails

Thanks Bill

Bill, glad to see that you agree! I ordered Allslip luff slides today. I hope they're not THAT expensive!. I also requested the longer (2.25") shackle fitting to attach the sail.
