Raymarine and Your Laptop...
Hey Nick,Great question. I, too, have an RL70RC radar/chartplotter from Raymarine & I love the idea of being able to interface it with my laptop. In fact, when I saw that it was do-able through Raymarine's software & hardware kit, it was one more reason to go with Raymarine. Before you get too excited, though, check out the cost. I work in the software industry and there are a lot of hardware/software experts that I work with. I showed them the interface & what it cost & they were blown away. Connecting an HSB2 system to a serial port on a laptop is a fairly eaqsy thing to do & their modem interface isn't very expensive to make. It seems to me (I could be wrong here, this is only an opinion) that Raymarine doesn't want it's laptop interface to compete with the purchase of a 2nd unit for the Nav station below. I want to say the complete system is around $1,300 @ West Marine. To me, that's just too much $$. I like the C-Map system & Maptech, for the money. The benefit of the C-map system is that you can use your existing c-map charts & not have to purchase additional charts for your area. You also get a c-map card read/write drive that will allow you to plot waypoints at home, store them on the c-map disk, bring them to the boat & download them directly into the Raymarine chartplotter. Not bad for around $149 + an extra $30 for the writable cartridge.
