Hi, I have a 1981 Hunter 30 with a Yanmar 2QM-15. The primary fuel filter/separator is this very old looking bronze colored cylinder that I would like to replace. I know that I see the "Racor" brand a lot, but I would like to know if anyone has any opinions or recommendations for a good replacement item. Also, is the installation a straight forward operation (I know I will have to bleed the fuel system)? Thanks!

Same filter

I have the same filter on my 2001-290 and it works fine but I too think of adding a raco,if you do any filter changeing just fill the can with fuel when reinstalling and you won't need to do any bleeding.

no problem to change out filter

On my '79 Hunter 30' YSM12 I replaced the primary filter with a Racor. I had to run a new fuel line and find a mounting spot but other than than that, and $100, I did not have any problems. Bleeding is not a problem as you have to do this when you change your secondary filter. Do them both together as this is now the end of the season on the Chesapeake. Good Luck.

what's wrong with the filter you now have?

It's probably a Groco GF. Doesn't it work? Its not hard to change the element. As far as I can see the only thing extra you will get with the Racor is the visible bowl.

Love that visible bowl ...

the only time I've had a fuel problem was water in the old bronze filter ... and it would have been quite easy to see it in the Racor ... I've changed to racor on a couple of boats and never had to do much more than take the old filter out and replace with the Racor ... and in one installation I added a shut off just before the filter so that I could change it easier. but I would now consider going one Racor filter size larger than the minimum recomended. that small plastic bowl in the small filter is really small and you can always get fittings to match it up. Racor replacement

I just completed the same chore on "Sail-La-Vie", my Morgan 382 with a Yanmar 3QM30. The original primary was a 10micron Fram, and I was having trouble locating replacement filter elements. I replaced it with a small Racor spin-on... model 120 if I recall. The transparent bowl certainly is a nice feature, and the spin-on filter should make maintenance easy. The previous owner had installed an electric pump between the fuel tank and primary filter, so bleeding was as simple as cracking the vent and turning the ignition key on until the air bubbles disappeared. Pretty easy job, but worthwhile. Diesels want clean dry fuel! Good luck. Larry

Backup Filter

Having had my engine stop twice in 8 years because of water in the fuel, I redesigned the filter system on my 35.5. I replaced the original brass filter with a Racor with the clear bowel. Now I can see the water before the engine stops. The next thing that I did was replumb the filters by running them in parallel with valves to open one and close off the other. Now if the filter with the clear bowel stops up, I can switch to the backup filter for a brief time before it plugs up. Hopefully this gets me through the breakwater and into my slip. If not, then I have to call for a tow again.

hey Larry

our boat's name is the C'est La Vie. I use the Racor also, tip from my diesel mechanic is too keep can of transmission fluid on board and fill the filter with the transmission fluid to cut down on bleeding time.
