fuel usage

I just upgraded to a Hunter 290(year 2000) with a Yanmar Diesel 18 HP. I was wondering what I can expect for fuel usage per hour. I have put a 3 hours on the engine so far and the fuel gauge has not moved off full and I am not sure if its working. I checked the gauge and it has power to it. My concern is that the float in the tank is stuck. This is my first experience with diesel.

Model Number?

I would assume the boat has a 2GM20F Yanmar in it and probably is only slightly heavier than our 7,000# Hunter 28.5. If that is the case you could expect about 1/2 gallon per hour on average. If the tank was already full, you probably wouldn't see much difference with 3 hours of operation as it's likely a long narrow tank, wider att he top than at the bottom. The mechanical float arm bounces a little more as the tank emptys and fuel sloshes around more. I'd keep trackof the number of hours and then re-fill the tank after 10 hours total operation (watching the gauge of course).

Yeah, three hours...

on a 2GM20F is not going to move the fuel gauge. I have Hunter 30 with the same motor and I burn less than 1/2 gallon an hour at cruise. Enjoy it, at over $5.00 a gallon, you still feel like your getting your money's worth.

Same motor.

Tom: We had the same engine on our '85 H'31. We averaged from .75 - 1.0 gph running the engine at the recommended 2800 rpm. It is recommended that you run these engines at 70-80% (2500-2900 rpm) of the max rated RPM (3600 max rating). I have always tracked this using an engine hour meter so I know that it was about as accurate as I could track. If you boat is lighter you may achieve slightly better consumption numbers.

fuel tank

We have a 290 same year. All the above is correct. You can alos remove the panel across the back cabin and see both the fuel tank and holding tank. handy to know if you are questioning the guages. Something I 've learned is NOT to let the fuel tank go below 1/2. I got into some stormy weathe with the tank at 1/4 and the fuel moved from the engine intake line. Air started to get in, NOT Good. I alos when cruining keep a five gallon jerry jug of diesel on board just in case.
