I recently purchased a Hunter 34', and just now realized that there does not seem to be a fuel gauge. Anyone elses boat without a gauge, and if so, how do you determibe how much fuel is in the tank?

Not easy but here is what I do
I agree a fuel gauge would be nice. What I do if I need a fairly accurate measure is climb down in that ever tighter starboard locker and disconnect the filler hose and stick a measuring stick down in the tank. You can then stick the stick down alongside the tank on the outside to figure out how full it is. One of these days I will mark increments on the stick and then it will be even more accurate. That is if I can still squeeze down into that locker. Rest of the time I just keep track of the running time and use 1/2 gal ( IMP) as an average. You can see the fuel level in the tank with a flashlight if it is fairly high and you look very carefully ( or more easily if you have an algae problem!)

Depending on the type of your tank
If your tank is plastic, you can hold a flashlight to the side panel, and then look for the level of the fuel. If your tank is metal, then you are out of luck. You can use a stick, but for the best solution, install a guage. Some guage goes inside, some mounts on the outside.

Estimate use
ZZ, when I first put fuel in my new-to-me 34 last fall, I discovered that the PO had the tank size wrong. By tracking the hours of use on the hour meter and making as accurate as possible estimate of the amount of fuel I put in on the first spring fill, I was able to determine that I was burning about .4 gallons an hour at about 2,500 RPM cruising revs. I now use that and the hour meter to when and how much to add back into the tank to keep it at least 3/4 full. No Gauge
I have a '77-30' hunter with a completely usless fuel gauge on top of the tank. It is only readable from the starboard locker when standing on your head after removing the inside locker panel. This means emptying the locker. All this to read the level. I was planning to redo the teak coamings so I thought to move the diesel filler from the starboard side to the cockpit sole. This would be a straight shot to the tank with a 6" hose. One could easily use a dipstick to check the level ending all the acrobatics. Anyone have any ideas on this?

ZZ, early in the production run for the H34,s Hunter went to a Yanmar 3GM engine. Mine has the fresh water cooling option (sealed system with a heat exchanger with the raw water). I also have the large mast step, which was eliminated in later production.

Carl, I know the specs say 25 gallons, but I estimated the capacity at about 20 after an overflow surprise while filling it with a jerry can. How did you determine the 22 gallons? S/V Intrepid '83 H34 #113
