Fuel Tank Problem

Hi- I have an Ericson 27 (1973) and I’m hoping to get some advice from other owners on a "new project"… I found a leak in the fuel tank for the Atomic 4. It's a hole about the size of the tip from a ball point pen. It's nearly impossible to see so reaching the hole for repair seems to be out of the question. The hole is on the side wall near the stern (and on the bottom edge of the tank). At this point my conclusion is that the tank must be removed, either to be repaired or replaced. But before I spend an entire weekend working on this I'm wondering if any other E27 owners have any helpful advice. I'm interested to hear any thoughts. A couple of my specific questions... 1. Is it possible to even remove the tank? 2. Assuming it can be removed, should I have the tank repaired or replaced? 3. If it can't be removed, what to do? Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Chris

It would seem that the hole is most likely the result of rusting from the inside, in which case the whole bottom is suspect, so replacement is called for. You can check the thickness of the plate with an electronic sounder Forgot the proper name of the gadget, but it will tell you if the bottom is thinner than the walls.

BEEE Careful

I replaced the fuel tank on my O'Day 26 Atomic 4 a dozen years ago. From my memory, it won't be that hard a job if you prepare, use the right tools and buy wisely. Please be careful while down there. DO replace the tank: gosh, it is over twenty years old! Do use a new type-approved filler hose, re-caulk the filler cap and study the fuel lines carefully as well. Awe, go ahead and replace them, again, with type approved hoses. Boat US etc. should help you find parts that fit. Don't think you are married to the size/shape/construction of the old tank. Get the old one out any safe way you can. Be absolutely sure the new cradle for your new tank is secure. Take care, Joe

POR-15 sealing kit

POR-15 has an in-place sealing process for tanks if you have a large enough inspection port to work with (see link below):
