Noticed fuel in bilge, checked and found leak coming from tank. I have an aluminum tank. Anyone else have any experience with fuel tank leaks on their Hunter and if so, was tank replacement an easy DIY. Have a 1997 Hunter 310.

Are you sure that it is the tank and not a fitting?

I do not know you configuration, but these tanks can sometimes be a real problem. You may want to consider replacing the tank (if that is what it is) with a poly tank.

I once had an aluminium tank which was located right above the stern gland. The gland was a Deep Sea Seals type with a face seal. Unbeknown to me the tank was subjected to a very fine spray of seawater whilst the engine was running. Eventually it perforated and began to weep diesel.
So I drained the tank and cleaned everything off with acetone and as a temporary measure only I immediately slapped on a coat of clear resin and added several more layers resin and glass on top.
Repair was so good it was like that six years later when I sold the boat.
So it can be done.

Yours may have perforated from water in the fuel.

We have a 92 Hunter Legend 37.5. A few years ago, our aluminum fuel tank developed pinhole leaks and we replaced it with a plastic one. When I contacted Hunter after discovering the leak, someone fro there emailed me with the comment that they had "heard of some aluminum fuel tanks leaking but it was not common". Our aluminum holding tank lasted about 10 years and the fuel tank about 3 years longer. We only hope the water tank will not fail also.
