Fuel system primer bulb failure

Like many Hunter owners, I installed a primer squeeze bulb in my diesel fuel system - between the tank and the primary filter. It worked great to re-fill the fuel system when changing filers and to pressurize the system when bleeding. This summer, I experienced an intermittent loss of power, usually after motoring about 20-30 minutes. The engine sputtered and stalled but usually started up again after a while. On my final trip of the year, motoring to the yard to have the boat hauled. The engine quit and could not be restarted. I could not get fuel to flow to the engine. I by-passed the primer bulb and primary filter and was able to start the engine. I later found that the valve components inside of the squeeze bulb and come apart and were floating around inside the bulb. They would occassionaly block or restrict fuel flow and then fall out of the way, until next time. It did not appear that the diesel fuel had softened or otherwise affected the plastic parts. They just came apart. I found I could not blee

Good reason not to use one.

John: Thanks for your input. I believe that you have convinced me that this is an excellent reason NOT to have one of these. Just another source for failure. Just what I do not need on my boat. It only takes about 2-3 minutes to completely pump up the system with the thumb pump. Why take a chance.

Racor Primary

I installed a Racor screw-on cartridge filter with an integrated primer pump. Works great and no need to worry about a bulb primer.
