Fuel squirting out vent

Just my thought on the matter.... Once the tank is full to the top, you've cut off the air supply to the vent, and fuel starts going under pressure up the vent. Not so easily done on the fill side, as fuel is going in under pressure and limiting the fuel backflow because it is an easier path to go up the vent. Same (almost) as the holding tank. Once the hose to the deck fitting is submergered, pressure builds up in that hose as the tank gets fuller. When you open the deck fitting, it releases pressure. Open it( and release pressure) too quickly, and the crap blow out with it. My 2 cents. and I'm sticking with it.

It squirts out the vent before it comes out the deck fill.
vent is on cockpit combing above fill
I wonder if anyone reads a thread completely.:deadhorse:

Since diesel, #2 fuel OIL, has almost ZERO evaporation rate

@Maine Sail wins the Blue Ribbon, his post #7! (anyone surprised?)

@Mark Maulden
Your BURP is the diesel from your LAST overfill.
Fix your vent line and don't overfill it again.;)

If you don't fix your vent line, one day your engine will sputter and stall at high RPM when your fuel tank pulls a vacuum.

Jim...

PS: @Maine Sail I wonder if you could make a Racor like self draining WIDE SPOT in the vent line for <$20 out of PVC fittings?

Somehow, I'm breaking the laws of fluid mechanics and gravity hence the reason for my post. After this season, I'm going to review the vent line installation. When I installed it, it looked good. Exits the tank and runs flat for about 8" and then heads straight up
Mark, here's your answer. Jim's right and Maine Sail's #7 answered your question. Of course, he was only guessing, since you didn't tell us you built it horizontal until reply #19!

THAT'S your answer.

Good luck.

man this fluid dynamics is an interesting topic
Yeah I tried a fluid dynamics test at the Marina Bar one day.

I had a frosty cold 12 ounce well vented Beer mug and a cold 16 once beer in a can.
I started slowly pouring the canned beer from a precise height of 12".
Turned my head to listen when the mug was FULL and NOT overflowing.

Dang it! The Mug overflowed onto the bar top and made a mess!

I repeated the test (hic!) 8 duffernt tiems from different (hic hic hic) prcise hites (hic!)

Bar towel plse.!!

Ahhhh it must have been the Alabama hillbilly music was too loud in the bar!!!

Jim...

PS: @SBO Police Bot don't get me. Hic Hic....;)

should have gotten a bigger can :cowbell:

I would think the little 8" horizontal at the tank should not be a problem. The motion of the boat should return that to the tank...No traps. In any event, if it is, its not going to change.

I think the issue is covered well.
But I'd like to add one thing.
Diesel foams really bad, worse when warm. Somtimes the fueling hose is 50 feet long or more and laying on the fuel dock and you will get nothing but foam till the cooler fuel comes out of the storage tank. If you can fill up just after that big power boat or on a cooler morning that will help alot. As little as most sailboats use you never get to the cooler fuel you just get the foam.
