Has anyone had to replace their fuel pump? My engine has been acting funny the last couple of weekends. It would run fine then seemed to bog down to a point of almost stalling. When I backed off the throttle and then power up again it would run fine. It had me nervous because the currents in our cruising ground are strong enough to get in serious trouble if the engine fails.

Last weekend I replaced my secondary fuel filter but it continued. This weekend I replaced the primary Racor. Both looked pretty clean to me. I ran the engine at anchor for 15 minutes and the engine just died. After an hour+ of trouble shooting I figured it must be the fuel pump. Have you ever tried to get a marine fuel pump at noon time Saturday on Martha's Vineyard? After an hour of phone calls I was able to find a Facet universal fuel pump at NAPA that didn't look remotely close to the one that I had removed. I bought it with my fingers crossed and temporarily hooked it up. It worked.

Can anyone cross the Universal #301385 (Facet 476459N) to a Kubota #?
I need to buy a new one without the marine premium.

First check that the pick up tube in the tank DOES NOT have a screen. If it does, remove it...

You can replace round style Facet with round but the cube series are better pumps and cost less.

There are a number of fuel pumps that can replace the old Facet, now Facet-Purolator, round style.

The Facet- Purolator pumps which will have some similar specs to the M-25's original pumps are..

POSI-FLO Series - FEP-06SV / PRO-06SV,

CUBE Series - FEP-12SV / PRO-12SV,

Gold Flow Series - FEP-87SV / PRO-87SV. (round style)

The Purolator cube models are reliable as heck. Our Westerbeke uses a PRO-42SV and has over 3200 hours on it.

The PRO-12SV (PUR-40106) works well on M-25's etc..

Didn't have one! checked that one out a few years back. Thanks for the quick reply.
Also have to thank you on your advise on another post on cruising dangers in Maine. I had to dive to cut a lobster pot I snagged a few weeks ago. I had blue ablative paint all over my arm from trying to keep the boat away from my head as it was bobbing. I like the line from the stern cleats and the knife on a lanyard idea too.
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!

What is the difference in the PSI rating?

I found the original equipment @ 159.00 6-8 psi 32 gal./minute

http://shop.torresen.com/ships_store/index.php?p=details&mfc=Facet Pump&sku=476459N

verses $85.00 @ 4.5-5 psi - 36 gallons/hour

Not much on these small engines. Our 44HP uses the cube style Pro42SV which has less PSI than the older round style 476459E. The 476459E can be had for about $80.00 if you google it and is the same pump you likely had... Our boat has had a spare cube pump on-board since the engine was replaced 3200+/- hours ago and it's never been needed.

P.S. I suspect Torresen adds the "N" at the end of that pump to confuse cross referencing or that was an older Facet/Purolator number no longer used. Google 476459E instead....

There is also a screen inside my Facet electric pump than is not easily noticed, have you checked for that screen on your pump?

Dan,

I removed the screen and it was very clean. I'm sure the pump just failed @ 420 hours.

Stu,

In my Google search I saw a C34 write up by you a few years back on the use of a NAPA fuel pump. http://c34.org/bbs/index.php?action=printpage;topic=2515.0 It looks exactly like the one I bought as a temporary replacement. I am curious on their reliability? Have you had any problems with yours?

I just ordered the Cube PRO-12SV Pur# 40106 that Maine suggested. $50.00 with shipping. I plan to replace the NAPA pump with the PRO 12SV and keep the NAPA as a back up. I need another boat just to store the ever growing tool and backup parts collection!

Funny things can and do happen. When I installed the pump I started the engine and ran it for 10-15 minutes. My wife said she heard a funny sound. I was down below and thought everything sounded fine. I went topside and the Temp alarm was sounding (kind of a muted sound). I forgot to open the thru hull. I shut her down immediately. I needed a break so we went ashore, ate dinner, listened to some good music then returned to go to sleep. Next morning I opened the water pump to replace the impeller and the one inside looked completely intact and pliable. I replaced the cover and started the engine and water flowed.
