In the general aviation community there are websites that list the latest prices for fuel at different airports. (For example, aviation fuel at airports within 50 miles of my home field vary between $3.50/gal to $5.23/gal.) I have not been able to find an equivalent for boat fuel prices, probably due to limited area that we generally cruise in. However, I thought it would be interesting to see what people are paying for fuel at different locations. Who knows, given a choice of fuel prices you might decide to stay in another marina than the one you were planning. To start things off, last Friday (4/28/06) I paid $2.90/gal for diesel in Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands, Washington State. Anyone else buy fuel in the San Juans? What is fuel going for elsewhere? Chesapeake Bay? Southern California? Warren

I do not buy fuel at my marina. When I used gas, bought it any station. Now that I use diesel, I buy it at a truck stop where they use lots of it so I know it is fresh.

Gas price in Canada

Talked to father-in-law last night. He said they paid up to $1.60 CDN per litre on a trip from Edmonton to Vernon, BC and back. That's about double we are paying here!

Monty, check your numbers

Gas in Toronto is about $1.05 CDN today, equal to $.95 U.S. per litre. There are 3.64 litres to a U.S. gallon, so = $3.46 U.S. The difference is all taxes, of course, since we actually have excess refining capacity and Canada is a net exporter of petroleum products. One of the results of the higher taxes, as you would expect, is that you see more small cars and fewer SUVs and light trucks on city streets. Getting back to topic, Diesel is also about 15% to 20% more expensive than in New York state.

David, I beg to differ

Gas somewhere in the wilderness of British Columbia was $1.60 CDN yesterday, equal to $1.45 U.S. per litre according to the exchange you gave. There are 3.78 litres to a U.S. gallon, so = $5.47 U.S. I just paid $2.77 US per gallon 20 minutes ago. That is almost double. Yikes! I'm not trying to start a war with you and I hope you are not an accountant.

Fuel - Duel

David & Monty a 'gas war' do you guys see that one of you fellas has it at 3.64 liter & 3.78 per U.S. gallon? The of course you have, or use to have the 'imperial' gallon due to a kings whim, we are on the 'old' system. I use to be a bit of a purist and tack up the coast, it takes TWICE as long + and you give those lows time to catch up to you, a passage to Hawaii is, well you get whats ya gets... Tony I'm leaving today to take a yacht up the coast, but you guys will have a great trip. The only trick I know that can help is, carry some jerrys of fuel and never get you tank below 1/3 as when you hit a wave you can suck air, then yer down below bleeding injectors.I ahve sucked air twice with 1/2 tank, positive on that as I ahd added it and knew the capacity. No, the baffles don't stop this effect like a fisherman explained, 'the fuel gets airborne' and the pick up at the tank bottom sucks air, not a problem in a gas engine/tank, but a diesel stalls right NOW! Get a 3ft clear (you can see the fuel running) plastic hose 3/4" id methinks, and fits snugly onto the jerry spout. Bon voyage!
