We usually try to top up diesel at Point Judith.

Any other relatively decent places to buy?
Newport?

We're on the way to Maine...

We always try to buy at a yacht club for better prices. PIYC in Onset Bay just before the canal is a good spot.

Active Captain has fuel prices listed with the date it was reported. Very helpful in checking for cheap fuel. Also remember that you want clean fuel. I like to go to places that pump a lot of volume. Last I checked Sandwich Marina on the canal had decent costs and pumped a lot of volume. I topped off at Kingmans yesterday and the price wasn't bad $4.10 a gallon I think.

Ed,

Try to focus on good fuel from high turn over ValvTect fuel resellers. Valvtect regularly inspects the fuel quality of its dealers I have been at marinas when this inspection & testing is taking place. As such I only fill at Valvtect marinas..

If you are stopping off in Provincetown before making the crossing, refueling is very easy there. Nice floating fuel dock at the end of the pier. The payment system is a bucket on the end of a rope as the tides are large and there is no ladder to the pier. It is an extremely easy place to pick up fuel and be on your way, Steve.

In NH the Portsmouth Yacht Club always has the best price, swift currents, and usually a mooring or shared spot with Kittery Yacht Club. Enjoy the trip and I'll hold back the rain.

Is there much experience with getting bad fuel on the east coast? I never hear reports of such.

All I ever see is valvtech, are there 'watered down' sellers around here? Low cetane?

Anyone that sells at a good price is usually pumping a lot of fuel and that means clean fuel.
Point Judith is currently at 3.75 incl tax.
We polish all our diesel all the time.

The suggestion to use active captain makes no sense. There must be thousands of fuel docks in NE. Am I supposed to look at every one of them to find good prices? OK, just the 500 or so on my route? Only to find that most of the prices are way out of date?
Waterway Guide posts UPDATED fuel prices but unfortunately for only a small percentage of marinas.
Cruisers Net calls EVERY marina every week to get fuel price updates. Very nice. But only in the "Salty Southeast" :-(
I have a free subscription to marinefuel.com and that was great...was...they seem to have regressed :-(

I'm surprised at the lack of specific places mentioned. Is Portsmouth NH the only place with notable pricing?

From Va south, prices of 3.50 to 3.75 are pretty easy to find. And IF Point Judith can do it, why not others.
BTW, I've bought fuel there 4 other times in the past 2 years.

Thanks

So how much fuel are you buying that a few cents or even a dollar would dictate where you stop to get it? Raven holds 18 gallons and I have never considered the cost in where I stop for fuel. I usually bring a 5 Gal container from home to top things off before a trip and then fill up wherever I happen to be. In the grand scheme of things a few extra dollars just wouldn't be worth my trouble to go to a specific dock to obtain fuel. I am as cheap as and poor or poorer than the next guy but have never worried about the cost of fuel. I also don't worry all that much about getting bad fuel as I just don't think it happens all that often.

Am I all wrong on this or is this what most people do so there isn't all that much information about current prices at specific docks? This might be worthy of a survey, Steve.

We cruise full time. Run 4000 to 5000 miles per year and most of that is motorsailing. 10 or 20 cents isnt a big deal but I frequently see half to a whole dollar variance within an area.

Whoa, that is a lot of miles and hours on the motor. My annual mileage is no where that high and I am certainly not putting that many hours on the engine.

The difference in fuel cost is still probably a tiny fraction of your overall budget.

When you stop at Pt Judith for fuel, do you stay there for the nigh?

My criteria for a fueling stop is that it has to be very easy, pretty or I have to be desperate to stop there, Steve.

I follow the lobster boats when looking for fuel. My thinking is they use a lot and shop wisely. We motor sailed from Provincetown to Portland last month and fueled at our home dock. Probably could've saved $15-20 going to Portsmouth, but we were running ahead of some weather. Sorry about the rain.

Point Judith harbor of refuge is a good servicable anchorage. Nothing to write home about. But when we're out full time we dont need every nights stop to be perfect, just safe and relatively comfortable.

I doubt we would go well out of our way to Portsmouth to save a few bucks.

But I would suspect there is great variation in each area.

Anyone have a preffered fuel dock in Penobscot Bay?

I have always used Billings Diesel and Marine in Stonnington. Really nice folks. Easily accessed, floating, fuel dock which is out of the wind and current. Marine store, ice, water, pay shower and great mechanics if you happen to need them. A stop at the town dock for groceries and beer pretty much provides all you could possibly need. Then it is a short ride a vast number of beautiful anchorages, Steve.

Sorry, that was a reply to the Penobscot Bay post. Stonnington, Maine not CT.

Stonnington, CT is very pretty but I have never tried to resupply there, Steve.
