Not sure about the smell, but if it's very dark or gummy I'd polish it through conventional means.
Old gasoline has an unmistakably rank smell.
As diesel fuel ages, it does develop a 'sweet' smell, but I believe that this occurs before enough important additives have evaporated to be a problem. A visual inspection of the fuel in your filters (or your tank if you have good access) is more instructive and if you have doubts, simply pump it out and use in a less critical application.

Ah, thank you, thank you. My fuel is two years old and there is a smell unpleasantly sweet about the boat. Time for a run for this liveaboard.
There is also a metallic smell. Can this be mold?
