Fuel Guage/Sending Unit for Catalina 270

I just bought a 1994 Catalina 270, and the fuel guage is stuck on full. How do I check to see if it is the sending unit or the guage that is faulty? Craig.

Could your tank be topped off? That Perkins M20 is never thirsty. I would first look to ensure that wiring is intact on back of guage and on the sending unit on fuel tank. Something may have been thrown into stbd rear seat locker knocking wires off tank. Ken PS: How many hours on your Perkins?

We have 476 hours on the Perkins. The previous owner left a hit list of items to fix on the boat. One was a faulty fuel guage reading full all the time. I did notice quite a bit of diesel fuel in the bilge, and under the engine. I thought it might have been due to over filling the tank. I cleaned everything up, and hoses seems tight. Any idea where all this would come from?

If the tank had been overfilled it usually vents out thru a small SS vent outside stern on stbd side. it could be that that vent line leaks . Another possibility is that PO changed the fuel filter and racor and left excess to drain to bilge. Ps: plain old "409" is excellent for cleaning and breaking down diesel fuel and getting rid of odors. After you clean the bilge and engine area and have run the engine a bit check for new leaks.
