Fuel guage location

I am caretaking a 1978 Hunter 30 for its owner. Can someone tell me where the fuel quantity guage is. I see a guage on the start panel but that looks like a water temp guage. Perhaps I'm mistaken. Also, this boat has a Renault diesel engine. I've never seen one of these before. Is the Renault engine common on this boat? Most Hunters I've seen have the Yanmar engine. Help! Larry

Dipstick in Fuel Tank on my '75 30

I have a 1975 Hunter 30 with a Yanmar YSE. I know my engine is original. The fuel tank is measured with a dip stick placed in the fuel fill.

You're not gonna believe this

Hi, I have a 1979 Hunter 30. Mine has a 12 gallon diesel tank located beneath the cockpit - aft of the engine and transmission. It's actually located almost directly under the steering pedestal. Now here's the funny part... There's a fuel gauge located on top of the tank itself. It can be read, but it ain't easy. I have to open the starboard cockpit locker and stick my head into the locker until the gauge becomes visible - usually with my head and chest in the locker - upside down. Too funny. I've considered putting a small clear deckplate in the cockpit floor to make it easier to read, but I'm a little afraid it will leak and cause me a whole other list of problems. I figure I'll hold out as long as I can - while I'm still flexible enough to hang myself upside-down in the cockpit locker. :)

Fuel guage location on 81' H30

On my 81' H30 there is a fuel guage next to the fuse panel in the main cabin. I have replaced both the Guage and the sending unit in the last couple of years. The Sending unit is easy to replace, but getting in a comfortable position to get at it is difficult. I cleared out the starboard locker and layed sideways in there to replace the sending unit. It works, but you need to make sure that you have all your tools with you when you get in position! Good Luck!

Well I'll Be Danged!

Thanks Debo, I'm going to go have a look at the top of the tank on my 79 H30 right now. And yes, I did run out once, arggh...

Debo-look at this

Debo I have '79 Hunter 30 with a fixed 4" clear deck plate cut in over the fuel guage. I have not had a problem or leak in the 4 yrs I have owned the boat. Cut one in which should be no problem. Ian

Everything ought to work this well

Thanks for the info Ian - I think I'm convinced to finally put in my own "fuel inspection port" - especially if leaking hasn't been a problem. Glad to be able to help out too. Cheers.

I think I see it...

Well, I had a look at my fuel tank, but there is a bit of a plywood wall that seperates the lazarette from the engine space in my boat. So I couldn't really see the top of the tank. I did see what might've been a fuel gauge on the forward starboard corner of the tank. Is that it?

That is the location

That is the location. Try going at it from the quarter berth. Crawl in head first and you should be able to see the guage just behind the batteries and on the starboard side. To read, you might need an automotive mirror on a extension wand. Good Luck Ian

That's it

I think you're looking in the right spot there. Ian's mirror trick works good too. I've used one of my wife's compact mirrors in a pinch. Fair winds all.
