No fuel gauge, have to install your own

We have installed a mechanical fuel gauge in our 1987 Hunter 31. Works fine. Off the shelf from BoatUS.

Save your money

Install a Fuel Whistle for a fraction of the cost and never spill another drop of fuel. No fuel gauge is accurate enough to prevent fuel spills. Check out the Chandlery on this web site under "Propulsion".

Universal Electric Fuel Gauge & Sending Unit Kit

from West Marine, Part Number 547406 You can see it on their web site. We cut a hole in floor of the rear lazerette over the fuel tank for a 10 inch deckplate to access the top of the fuel tank. We drained our fuel tank, drilled a hole for the sensor in the top, drilled a hole in the side of the cockpit for the gauge, ran the DC wiring (with a switch). I'm not sure what Alan is talking about. We don't use the fuel gauge for filling the tank. We use it for figuring out WHEN we need to fill our tank. Good Luck.

Time

Once you have figured your fuel consumption (about .28 gal per hr.)you won't need a fuel gage. Dennis

Varying fuel consumption with conditions

We have found that our fuel consumption varies considerably depending on wind and water conditions. If we are powering in dead calm flat water we may get better fuel economy than if we are bucking wind and waves. Motor sailing also gives us different results. We also use most of our fuel in 10 minute increments just leaving the slip. So we don't try to calculate fuel usage manually. We just glance down at our fuel gauge and drop by the fuel dock when we get low. Maybe not as "Yar" but works for us.

Tide helps/hinders as well

Additionally, the tide is a major factor with my fuel consumption. Sometimes, going against the tide and head-wind has me at full throttle making only one-quarter knot. Scott s/v Rubicon Key West
